Dr Roz Savage MP has called on the Government to backdate Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners who lost out last winter.

Under the current plans, pensioners earning £35,000 a year or less will see their Winter Fuel Payments reinstated this winter. However, those who missed out last year—despite now qualifying—will not be reimbursed.

Roz is urging the Government to extend support to the approximately 20,000 pensioners in the South Cotswolds who lost their payment last winter but will receive it this year.

Roz said:

“Backdating this support is the least the Government can do, after so many older people were left choosing between heating and eating last winter. It was a deeply unfair decision that caused real hardship, and it should never have happened.

“I’m relieved that ministers have finally listened to the Liberal Democrats, charities and campaigners who warned of the consequences—but recognising the mistake is only part of the solution. They now need to do right by those who missed out last year.

“I’ve heard from residents across the South Cotswolds who were badly affected when this help was withdrawn. If the Government is truly listening, they must ensure no one is left out by backdating these payments for all those who missed out last winter and are now eligible again.

“My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I will continue pushing in Parliament to get this support back into the pockets of those who need it.”
