Roz Savage MP has written to the Environment Agency and questioned the Government following the installation of a “No Swimming” sign at Daniel’s Well in Malmesbury, raising serious concerns about pollution, water quality, and the safety of local residents.

The South Cotswolds Liberal Democrat MP said the decision to prohibit swimming has brought long-standing fears about the River Avon’s health to the forefront. Residents have reported a decline in wildlife such as crayfish and several incidents of illness following contact with the water.

Data from Surfers Against Sewage shows multiple sewage discharges from the nearby St John’s Bridge overflow during 2024, including major pollution events in January and June this year. Roz is pressing the Environment Agency for transparency and urgent action.

In her letter, Roz called for full disclosure of recent water quality data for the River Avon, details of investigations and enforcement following sewage discharges, information on remedial works and pollution prevention plans and consideration of bathing water designation for Daniel’s Well in the future.

Roz said:

“The River Avon is one of Malmesbury’s most loved natural landmarks, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. It’s deeply concerning that people are reportedly becoming unwell after swimming and that wildlife is disappearing. The community deserves to know the truth about what’s happening to their river and to see strong, transparent action from those responsible.”

Roz also questioned a Minister in Justice Question on Tuesday 11 November in the House of Commons Chamber, asking the Government why they did not support a Liberal Democrat amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill which would provide compensation to those who have fallen ill due to illegal sewage dumps.

In the Minister’s reply, she stated:

‘In the vast majority of cases of the type she raises, criminal conduct in relation to sewage and waste water would be committed against the environment, not directly against the person. However, where someone has been affected as a result, they are able to access services, via the NHS for example, to seek support.’
