South Cotswolds MP, Dr Roz Savage, has welcomed the Government’s first Climate and Nature Statement, a key commitment secured through her Climate and Nature Bill.

The statement, delivered in the House of Commons by Secretary of State Ed Miliband on Monday 14 July, marks the first time the Government has formally presented an update on its climate and nature policies jointly on behalf of both the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Department for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.

The commitment to publish a joint annual statement on climate and nature was one of several agreements secured by Roz in negotiations with ministers before the second reading of the Bill, which garnered cross-party support from over 100 MPs.

Speaking after the statement, Roz said:

“This is an important first step, and one I’m proud to have championed in Parliament. We’ve been clear from the outset that tackling the climate and nature crises must go hand in hand. The Climate and Nature Statement gives Parliament and the public a crucial opportunity to hold ministers to account.

There is more work to do to ensure this process is transparent, collaborative, and impactful, but today shows what determined campaigning, both inside and outside Westminster, can achieve.”

Roz has also pledged to continue pressing the Government to honour its other commitments secured through the Climate and Nature Bill negotiations, including meaningful consultation with non-governmental organisations, local communities, and parliamentarians on future statements.
